How to obtain permanent residence or "Green Card" in the United States

Permanent residence is the status granted to immigrants to live and work permanently in the United States.

In most cases, a sponsor (employer or family member) is the one who applies for permanent residence or “Green Card” in favor of another person.

Annually the Government grants around 50,000 diversity visas to allow permanent residence or “Green Card” to people from countries with a low immigration rate to the United States. The Diversity Visa Program is known as the “visa lottery.”

How to apply for permanent residence for a relative

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) handles requests from US citizens and residents who apply for permanent residence or a green card for family members.

Direct family members of US citizens include unmarried sons / daughters under 21 years of age, spouses, and father / mother of a citizen over 21 years of age.

Other relatives of US citizens include unmarried sons / daughters over the age of 21, married children of any age, and brothers / sisters at least 21 years of age.

Family members of permanent residents include spouses and unmarried children.

To apply for permanent residence for a relative, fill out form I-130. You must submit a separate form for each relative.
